Floor drains are the most common option for freestanding tubs in New Zealand. The waste pipe runs vertically through the floor and connects below, typically within the floor cavity or slab. This approach offers visual cleanliness, as the pipework is hidden entirely beneath the bath. It also provides flexibility in bath positioning, particularly in open-plan bathrooms where wall proximity is not fixed.
However, floor drains require early planning. In renovations, existing floor waste locations may not align with the desired bath position. Relocating a floor drain can involve cutting concrete slabs or significant subfloor work in timber floors. These costs are often underestimated during the design phase.
Wall drains connect horizontally into the wall behind or beside the bath. This approach is less common but can be useful where floor penetration is impractical or restricted. In some renovations, existing wall plumbing can be reused, reducing structural disruption.
The trade-off is visibility and access. Wall-connected wastes often require exposed pipework or carefully concealed channels. Any misalignment is harder to hide, and access for maintenance may be limited once wall linings and finishes are completed.
Maintenance access is a key consideration for both options. Floor drains beneath freestanding baths are often difficult to reach without moving the bath itself. Wall drains may offer slightly better access if designed with removable panels or adjacent cabinetry, but this requires deliberate planning.
In Waikato homes, where slow leaks are more common than sudden failures, access becomes critical. A poorly accessible drain increases the risk that small issues go undetected, leading to moisture damage in floors or framing.
Structural considerations also differ. Floor drains concentrate load and movement at the penetration point. Proper sealing and support are essential to prevent flexing and seal failure. Wall drains place stress on horizontal connections, making accurate alignment and secure fixing equally important.
There is no universally better option. Floor drains suit new builds and bathrooms where layout flexibility is needed. Wall drains can work well in constrained renovations when access and aesthetics are carefully managed.
