In family bathrooms, bathtubs serve multiple roles. They are used by children for bathing, by adults for occasional soaking, and sometimes as a backup to the shower. Because of this, size selection needs to balance comfort, space efficiency, and long-term practicality — not just visual appeal.
In New Zealand, the most common bathtub lengths range from 1500mm to 1800mm. While larger tubs are often preferred in theory, they are not always the best fit for family bathrooms, particularly in standard-sized homes across Hamilton and the wider Waikato region.
A 1500mm bathtub remains the most practical choice for many family bathrooms. It fits comfortably into compact layouts, leaves room for vanities and storage, and is well suited to children’s use. For adults, it allows seated soaking rather than full-body immersion, which is acceptable for occasional use. Its smaller water volume also reduces filling time and hot water demand.
1600–1700mm bathtubs offer a middle ground. They provide better adult comfort without dramatically increasing space requirements. In homes with one main family bathroom, this size often represents the best compromise between usability and layout efficiency.
1800mm bathtubs are best suited to large bathrooms or master ensuites rather than shared family spaces. While comfortable for adults, they consume significant floor area and reduce flexibility for other fixtures. In family settings, the extra size is often underutilised once children outgrow regular bathing.
Width and depth matter as much as length. Deeper tubs increase water volume and comfort for adults but can be less practical for young children and increase slip risk. Wider tubs improve shoulder room but require more floor space and stronger structural support.
Another overlooked factor is cleaning. Larger tubs have more surface area and are harder to access around edges, particularly in tight bathrooms. In family homes where cleaning frequency is high, this becomes a daily consideration rather than a design preference.
In Waikato renovations, bathroom layouts are often constrained by existing walls and plumbing. Oversized tubs can force compromises elsewhere — narrower vanities, reduced storage, or awkward circulation paths. These trade-offs are often regretted after installation.
For most NZ family bathrooms, the best bathtub is not the biggest one available. It is the one that fits the space comfortably, supports daily routines, and allows the bathroom to function well for everyone who uses it — not just on rare occasions.
