
When selecting a heated towel rail, most attention goes to size and finish. Power connection is often treated as a minor detail, yet in New Zealand bathrooms it has a strong influence on safety, aesthetics, and durability. Hardwired and plug-in towel rails are both common, but they behave very differently once installed.
Plug-in towel rails are popular because they appear simple. They connect to a standard socket and can be installed with minimal electrical work. In renovations with limited scope or budget, this can seem appealing. However, the convenience comes with trade-offs that are often overlooked at the planning stage.

The main downside of hardwiring is upfront cost and planning. Installation must be carried out by a registered electrician, and wiring is easiest when planned before wall linings are closed. Retrofitting hardwired rails after a bathroom is finished can involve opening walls, which increases cost.
In rental properties, plug-in rails are sometimes chosen for ease of replacement. However, visible cords and sockets are more prone to damage or misuse. In many cases, a basic hardwired rail with a simple timer proves more robust over the life of the tenancy.
From a long-term perspective, hardwired towel rails generally suit owner-occupied homes and higher-quality renovations. Plug-in rails work best in temporary or low-intervention situations where visual compromise is acceptable.
In NZ bathrooms, the better option is rarely about convenience alone. Choosing between hardwired and plug-in towel rails is about balancing safety, appearance, and how long the solution is expected to last once the bathroom is in daily use.
