
Overflow holes are often treated as a secondary feature — something that is either present or not, without much consideration. In reality, they are a key part of moisture control in NZ bathrooms, particularly in vanities where water damage can develop slowly and expensively.
An overflow hole is designed to divert excess water away from the basin before it spills over the rim. When the water level rises too high, the overflow channel directs water straight into the waste system. This prevents water from running onto the benchtop, into cabinet joints, and down the vanity face.
In real use, overflows rarely activate during normal handwashing. They become important during unattended filling, blocked wastes, or tap malfunctions. These situations are uncommon — but when they occur, the damage without an overflow can be substantial.

There are cases where basins are intentionally chosen without overflows — typically in above-counter or feature installations. In these scenarios, risk must be managed through other means: controlled tap flow, careful waste selection, and disciplined user behaviour. This approach suits low-use spaces better than family bathrooms.
