
Slip resistance becomes a real issue the moment a bathroom floor gets wet. In NZ homes, accidents often happen not because tiles look slippery, but because their performance under wet conditions is misunderstood. This is where P-ratings come in — and where confusion often begins.
P-ratings are derived from the wet pendulum test, which measures how much resistance a surface provides when wet. The rating ranges from P0 to P5, with higher numbers indicating greater slip resistance. In practical terms, P0 and P1 surfaces offer very little grip when wet, while P4 and P5 are designed for high-risk, wet environments.
For NZ bathrooms, floor tiles should generally meet at least a P3 rating. This provides reasonable slip resistance for typical residential use when floors are wet but not heavily contaminated. In areas with higher risk — such as showers, bathrooms used by elderly occupants, or homes with children — P4-rated tiles are often a safer choice.
One common mistake is assuming that any “bathroom tile” is suitable for bathroom floors. Many tiles marketed for bathrooms are intended for walls, not floors. These tiles may have attractive finishes but lack the surface texture needed to achieve adequate P-ratings. When used on floors, especially in Waikato’s humid conditions, they can become hazardous.
Surface finish has a strong influence on slip performance. Highly polished or glossy tiles usually have low P-ratings and become slippery when wet. Matte, textured, or structured surfaces generally perform better, but texture alone does not guarantee safety. Some textured tiles still test poorly under wet pendulum conditions.
Another misunderstanding is the impact of wear and cleaning. Over time, surface treatments can wear down, and soap residue can reduce slip resistance. A tile that meets P3 when new may perform closer to P2 after years of use if not maintained properly. This is why regular cleaning with appropriate products is part of slip-risk management.
It is also important to match slip rating to location. A P5 tile may be appropriate for an outdoor entry or commercial wet area, but it can feel uncomfortable underfoot in a residential bathroom and be harder to clean. Over-specifying slip resistance can create new maintenance issues.
In NZ homes, P-ratings should be used as a decision tool, not a marketing label. The safest bathrooms balance slip resistance, comfort, and cleanability, based on who uses the space and how often it gets wet.
