In bathtubs, the 55°C limit strikes a balance. It is hot enough to provide comfortable bathing once mixed in the tub, but low enough to reduce the risk of instant scalding if a tap is turned fully hot. During renovations, confusion often arises when homeowners request “hotter bath water” without realising the limitation applies at the outlet, not the stored hot water. Increasing storage temperature does not override outlet restrictions and can actually increase risk elsewhere in the system if not managed correctly.
In Waikato homes, older plumbing systems sometimes lack modern tempering devices. When bathrooms are upgraded, plumbers are required to bring installations up to current standards. This can result in noticeable changes to water behaviour compared with older setups, but it significantly improves safety.
From a practical perspective, the temperature limit does not prevent hot baths. It simply requires that hot water be mixed in the tub rather than delivered at dangerously high temperatures.
